The Pros and Cons of Free Range Chickens

Raising your own chickens for eggs and meat is one of the first steps for your new homestead, right?  I call chickens the gateway drug!  Trust me, you start with chickens, then you move on to goats, then pigs, then cows, then who knows what else…. and your husband and kids are like “Please stop!  We don’t want anymore chores!”  Seriously, this has NOT happened in my life- ha!

I’m here to give you the lowdown on all things chicken, but since I could probably right an entire BOOK on it, in this post, I’m only going to really touch on laying hens, and the pros and cons of free range chickens, K? Continue reading “The Pros and Cons of Free Range Chickens”

Easy DIY Farmhouse Decor

easy diy farmhouse decor

Do you love all the farmhouse decor that’s so popular these days??

ME, TOO!!

Especially, since I live on a farm and have always kind of decorated that way (I use “decorated” loosely…. I’m so not talented in that area!)

When we remodeled our house a few years ago, I ended up with a large, blank, windowless wall in our living room.  I had no idea what to do with it (remember the lack of talent in the decorating arena??), so I lived with it for 3 years and pondered.

Just a little background on my lack of the decorating gene… we lived in a farmhouse south of town for 4 years and I didn’t hang a single thing in the living room the entire time we lived there!!  And we had a GIANT blank wall!  Yeah….

Anyway, back to my original story and how to get that trendy farmhouse style the easy way! Continue reading “Easy DIY Farmhouse Decor”

2018 Goals, goals

One Way to Complete a Goal

So, I’ve been a little MIA here on the blog because I have been working on a goal that I set to be completed by March 1!  And that was my quilt.

disappearing hourglass quilt. One Way to Complete a Goal

You see, I have the nasty habit of starting projects and not finishing them in a timely manner.

I have all sorts of excuses….

Life gets in the way, I don’t have time, I don’t have the proper materials, etc.

This particular quilt has been two years in the making.  I bought my fabric exactly two years ago, but first I made myself the deal that I had to complete my nephew’s graduation quilt.

So, I did, but then it took me several months of coming up with excuses before I started on mine.  I’d get good momentum, then the next step would paralyze me a little, so I’d come up with more excuses for why I couldn’t work on it.

One of my goals this year was to complete that quilt (which means getting the top pieced so I could give it to my mom to machine quilt) by March 1.  And I kept hem hawing around about why I just didn’t have time.

My sister gave me a swift *metaphorical* kick in the butt and told me I should just sit down and finish that darn thing, come hell or high water. (I’m paraphrasing here, lol).

So, ten days ago, I did just that.

I ignored everything else in my life (within reason… my family still got fed and we still got school done!) and just sewed, sewed, sewed.  And in six days I had that quilt done!

If you look in the background, you can see my messy living room…. I told you I ignored most everything else in my life, lol.

And that’s my advice for you.

One way to complete a goal?

JUST DO IT!!!!!

Sounds like a Nike commercial, right???  But it works… albeit at the expense of other things in your life.

If you have a project that you are determined to complete this year, I challenge you to just do it and get it done.  Quit making excuses and make it happen!!

Have you ever blocked out all else in your life to complete a long awaited project or goal?  Did you like that method or do you prefer a slow and steady pace?

Homeschooling with Dyslexia

homeschooling with dyslexia

Do you think your child has dyslexia?  How do you know?  And what do you do about?  Can you “cure” it with homeschooling?

Those were all questions that I had about 5 years ago.

We started homeschooling Elisa during kindergarten and by the time she was in 3rd grade, I was pretty confident I had this homeschool thing down.  She could read well, write well, knew all of her math facts.  She was actually a couple years ahead of her grade level!

So, when it was time for Lindy to start kindergarten that year, I figured it would be a piece of cake.  I knew she was smart and she had always been advanced for her age.  She started walking at 9 months and had a giant vocabulary by 18 months.  I figured she’d be like Elisa and practically teach herself and I would just be along for the ride.

Well, as it turned out…. Continue reading “Homeschooling with Dyslexia”
